There’s an old Bonnie Raitt song called, “Something to Talk About” that’s about falling in love and giving folks “something to talk about”! As I thought about that song, I realized that when something special happens to us like falling in love, we want to TALK about it! We want to tell the story, share all the details, get people’s reactions; relive what we’re experiencing. And when we do this, we DO relive the joy, fun and happiness of that experience. Problem is, as time goes by, we start to forget what happened and life’s struggles and difficulties move in and grab our focus.
So, I thought we could start remembering all the times in our lives when there was “something to talk about”. I think sometimes we struggle with being grateful or thankful when “life” intrudes on us. How am I going to pay those bills? When is this relationship going to turn around? Will my health ever improve? The list is endless. Gratitude can seem very far away.
This week, think back to the moments in your life when miracles happened; “coincidences” took place that were life changing. You got that job you didn’t think you were qualified for, you passed a test you didn’t study for, you got the call from your doctor that let you breathe again, you met someone out of the blue that changed your life. And these moments don’t have to be big ones – running late and a parking space appears out of nowhere, you reconcile your checking account and there are a few extra dollars just when you need them, you go to purchase something and find out at the checkout it’s 50% off. If we think about it, we all probably have hundreds of moments we can celebrate with gratitude. Then take the next step, talk about them. This week, make a conscious effort to share with folks these moments of goodness, joy and happiness. You’ll start to feel them again and find the gratitude you’re looking for. We all have “something to talk about” so start talking!
